The Dawn of a New Era: The 2007 PJXC Preview

Sparta, nj (Aug. 21, 2007) With the Pope John High School spring graduation including the most successful class of boy and girl harriers in the history of the program, the 2007 cross-country season brings about a new era for the cross-country teams. For the past several seasons, the graduated members of the class of 2007 carried Pope John to unprecedented heights in the circles of New Jersey cross-country: Four years of undefeated SCIL dual meets, eight SCIL festival titles (4 each), an NJCTC championship on each side (Boys 2006, Girls 2005), Pope Johns first ever (in any sport) NJSIAA Non-Public A state championship (Girls 2005), and numerous Top 5 rankings in media polls.

With graduation including six of the top ten members of last years squad, the 2007 boys team will be looking to fill several spots in the varsity top seven. Two of the positions will be filled by returning 2006 top seven members, seniors Jon Juleus (1:57 / 4:22 / 9:31) and Nick Beese (9:52).Other seniors looking to break in to the top seven include: Josh DAnna (2:05 / 4:50), Graham Medak (2:16 / 5:19), Doug Murphy (5:06), Trevor Warden (5:42), and Tom Wilson (5:18).The top junior class members vying for the top spots will be returning varsity members: Chris Gaus (10:27), Kevin McCormick (10:15) and Tim Paziora (10:11).Additional returning juniors include Joe Benedetto (5:23), Matt Hansen (6:48), Jim Morrisey (5:26), Paraic OReilly (2:11 / 4:56), Raj Trivedi (6:09) and Michael Williams (6:04).SCIL 2006 freshman champion AJ Hanifin (4:47 / 10:31) leads a strong sophomore class with Dan Grund (5:59), Greg Moore (5:59), Sean Reid (6:10), Pat Sheehan (6:29) and Jacob Williams (7:22).Perhaps a new member of the team will surprise and earn a position in the top seven.Prominent newcomers include juniors Kevin Goepp, Mike Lennon, Ben Rabe, Eric Stenger, and Ben Woods (5:06); sophomores Brendan Ferris (5:20), Dan Horohoe, Dan OSullivan, Chris Patterson, Nick Ryan, Mike Torres and Patrick Trusio; and freshman Tom Breslin, Paul D'Olivo, Dave Hanley, Ryan Lacey, Travis Lacey, Luke LaChac, Chris Lorenz, Dave Peer, Tim Rabel, and Reid Thomas.

Over on the girls side, the team will have a new frontrunner for the first time in four years as Lara Heigis (07) has taken her talents and many achievements to Brown University. The logical choice as the successor would be junior Sarah Cariati (2:15 / 5:05 / 11:21) as she finished 33rd (17th highest returnee) at the New Jersey Meet of Champions last season.Other returning members of the top seven include junior Jenny Heigis (5:14 / 11:27) and sophomore Ashton Weiler (5:29 / 11:54).Also returning to the top seven is senior Casey Keller (5:18 / 11:27) who missed last season with a stress fracture after a stellar sophomore campaign on the cross-country trails.Additional varsity members returning include senior Katie Potter (6:25), senior Zaharo Tsekouras (6:12), and sophomore Marissa Galante (5:44 / 12:18).Other returnees seeking a varsity position are sophomores Cat Carey (6:03), Meghann Cobo (8:13), Gabby Ferris, Kaila Hoer (6:32), Angela Poccia (7:54) and Ali Taylor (6:15). Newcomers expected to contend for top spots include senior Kim Trumpore; juniors Paige Boehmcke (5:18), Rebecca Costantini (2:33 / 6:04), Julie Dudley, and Ciara Vanness (5:30 / 11:54); sophomores Brianna Bourlier, Erin Smith, Melissa Trumpore, and Amanda Woods; and freshman Nicole DiGiacinto, Kelsey Katzgrau, Alida Santrock, Kelsey Steele, Ellen St. John, and Chrissy Wilson.

Collectively, both teams wish to extend their SCIL dual meet streaks (boys 56 straight, girls 40 straight), SCIL Festival streaks (boys 7 in a row, girls 4 in row), and perform greatly in the NJCTC and NJSIAA post season championships.

From a distance, the 2007 Pope John cross-country season should seem similar to the past few years with many successes and championships. But upon closer inspection, one could tell the difference, new members aspiring to join the greats of years past and seeking to claim their own place within the grand history of Pope John cross-country.
